Absolutely beautiful. Can't wait to go back
We hunted the stands they suggested for the first 4 days with no signs of a mature deer. We were just given the excuse of how warm it was and hopes that it would cool off. That was it, no suggestions of what stands to hunt for what wind. No ideas of where mature bucks might be bedded. We were literally on our own. The only advice we did receive was from a couple of hunters that had hunted the farms before, that we shared the camp with.
Hunted here in late September. My brother, best friend and I drove 16 hours from Maryland in hopes of harvesting a mature deer. I have been working so many hours, I have not had the time to put in the work it takes around my home to harvest a mature deer. I thought I would pay someone to do the work part for me. We were told this would be a better time then the rut to hunt because they would have the deer patterned. While it was well above normal temperatures for this time of year(90+ degrees), I failed to see the desire by the guides Brad and Carl to put us on a deer. They may have been patterned in late August, but with the beans turning and velvet shedding we were to late.
What I took away from this was while taking a mature deer this time of year is no easy task, our guides just didn't put in the work to put us on the deer . If you were thinking of hunting here, I would suggest the peak rut, when simply hunting any spot is as good as any. Brad, Carl and family were super nice, but nice doesn't harvest mature deer. I wish that their friendly nature and energy would have spilled over into harvesting a mature deer. Food and accommodations where ok, but I could care less about that! I paid to hunt not eat and sleep!
We were given a farm to hunt, an outdated Google map with a couple of suggestions of stands to hunt. They showed us trail cam pictures of bucks on the farm but all in velvet and nothing recent. A seasoned hunter knows once bachelor groups shed their velvet, mature bucks disperse and start to establish there home turf.
I've been going to Hickory Hills for 3 years now. Lots of bucks and lots of turkeys. Great food and great people. Brad and Carl go above and beyond to put you in a spot for opportunity at the best they've got. They spend a lot of time setting stands and checking cameras. If you need a reference from a guy who's been all over hunting, you've got it. I'll be happy to take calls from anyone who has any questions from a client's point of view.
Great place to go hunt. Helpful and friendly family run business.
